Homes evacuated near RAF Fairford as police arrest several men

Police evacuated residents from several properties in Whelford, southwestern England, and arrested several men on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act, Gloucestershire police said on Sunday.
Residents were being taken to a nearby leisure centre. The Army’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal team was examining a number of vehicles, police said.
Authorities have not stated the specific suspected offences, why the operation began or whether explosives were found. The number of people arrested has also not been disclosed.
Whelford is near RAF Fairford, an airbase used by US forces. Police have not said whether the operation is connected to the airbase.
