Haaland seals Manchester derby win for 10-man City
Manchester City held on for a 1-0 victory over Manchester United after Phil Foden’s first-half dismissal, with Erling Haaland’s goal upheld following a VAR review.
Manchester City defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the Manchester derby despite playing with 10 men for most of the match, according to Al Jazeera Global News.
City were reduced to 10 players in the 23rd minute when Phil Foden was sent off for kicking out at United captain Bruno Fernandes. United could not turn the numerical advantage into a goal, although Marcus Rashford struck the post with a free kick before half-time.
Haaland scored on the hour after adjusting to sweep in Josko Gvardiol’s deflected cross. A VAR review judged the striker to be onside and ruled that Enzo Fernandez was not interfering with play when he attempted to head the ball.
City came close to extending their lead, but Fernandez’s effort was turned onto the post and Haaland missed a chance for a second. United’s late attempt to equalise was denied when Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Bryan Mbeumo in stoppage time.
The result extended manager Enzo Maresca’s perfect start, while the report said City and Arsenal had 12 points and United were eight points behind them. United supporters also displayed a banner criticising the club amid anger over a recent crackdown on ticket touting.
