Haaland double gives Manchester City winning Champions League start
Erling Haaland scored in each half as Manchester City defeated Porto 2-0 in Portugal, securing Enzo Maresca’s first Champions League win as head coach.
Manchester City opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Porto in Portugal, with Erling Haaland scoring both goals.
Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa kept City scoreless during a first half in which he made several notable saves, including against Haaland. The visitors eventually took the lead shortly after half-time when Haaland headed Enzo Fernández’s cross into the bottom corner.
Porto increased their attacking pressure after the opener, while City were unsettled by a series of errors. The home side could not convert those opportunities, however, and City held their lead into stoppage time.
Haaland then finished Rayan Ait-Nouri’s cross to seal the result. Al Jazeera reported that the goal took his Champions League tally to 59 in 59 matches and made him Manchester City’s third-highest goalscorer, with 167 goals.
The result marked Maresca’s first Champions League win as City head coach. Ayyoub Bouaddi also made his first start for the club since joining from Lille.
