Guerrero’s Toronto Power Drought Marks One Year Amidst Injury and Slump

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. marked the one-year anniversary of his last regular-season home run in Toronto on Monday, a milestone that underscores a significant offensive downturn for the franchise’s cornerstone player. The home run occurred on 17 August 2026 against the Texas Rangers, ending a prolonged period where Guerrero failed to produce power at Rogers Centre.
Through 115 games in the 2026 regular season, Guerrero has recorded only seven home runs, all of which were hit on the road. This output has contributed to a career-low .693 OPS, a stark contrast to his previous five campaigns where he recorded an OPS below .800 in just one instance. The slump has been a defining feature of Toronto’s disappointing first half, which saw the team sell players ahead of the trade deadline and fall to a 61-65 record, sitting one game back of the final American League wild-card spot.
Despite the regular-season struggles, Guerrero delivered a high-impact performance during the Blue Jays’ 2026 postseason run. In 18 games, he hit eight home runs, including three in the American League Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners. His .397/.494/.795 slash line during the playoffs earned him the American League Championship Series MVP award, helping the team secure its first AL pennant since 1993. The run concluded with a Game 7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
Guerrero’s current availability is compromised by a concussion sustained in a collision with New York Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr. He is currently on the seven-day concussion injured list. The injury occurred during a sixth-inning sequence where Guerrero scored a game-tying run on a throwing error, taking a knee to the head. The Blue Jays won that contest and the series against the Yankees.
The power outage has been compounded by other physical issues earlier in the season. Guerrero opted out of the 2026 All-Star Game due to lower-back pain and left a game against the Washington Nationals on 28 July due to right hamstring tightness. The 27-year-old, who signed a 14-year, $500 million contract extension prior to the 2026 season, had previously led MLB with 48 home runs in 2021.
