Rob Gronkowski named grand marshal of Indianapolis 500 Snake Pit for 2nd straight year
Former NFL star appointed for second consecutive year ahead of Sunday’s race

Race organisers announced on Monday that four-time Super Bowl champion and Fox NFL Studio analyst Rob Gronkowski has been appointed grand marshal of the Indianapolis 500’s Coors Light Snake Pit for the second consecutive year. The appointment comes ahead of the sold-out race, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday.

Gronkowski, who played tight end for the New England Patriots from 2010 to 2018, will serve in the role at the third turn of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He will work alongside an all-star lineup of global electronic music artists during the event, which is situated on the 2.5-mile oval.

The former athlete described the appointment as a continuation of his engagement with the event, noting that his first experience at the Indy 500 occurred last year. In a statement, he characterised the Snake Pit as one of the most distinctive combinations of sport and music available, stating he returned to the role to help celebrate what he termed the biggest race in the world.

Gronkowski’s professional football career includes five Pro Bowl selections, four All-Pro honours, and the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award during his tenure with New England. He also secured three Super Bowl titles with the Patriots alongside quarterback Tom Brady before ending a one-year retirement to rejoin Brady in Tampa Bay, where they won a fourth championship. He retired again in November.

The Indianapolis 500 remains one of the most significant events in motorsport, drawing large crowds to the historic venue. Gronkowski’s continued involvement with the Snake Pit highlights the intersection of professional sports figures and entertainment programming at major racing events.
