Gordon makes early impact at Barcelona after £70m move
The England winger has supplied four assists in five appearances but is still waiting for his first Barcelona goal.
Anthony Gordon has made a strong early start at Barcelona after joining Newcastle United in a reported £70m transfer, according to BBC Sport. The 25-year-old has provided four assists in his first five appearances, although he is yet to score.
Gordon made two assists within four minutes of his league debut against Elche, including a decision to square the ball for a team-mate rather than attempt to complete his own scoring opportunity.
Used primarily on the left wing, Gordon has operated alongside Lamine Yamal and Raphinha in Hansi Flick’s attack. Barcelona have scored 22 goals and conceded three in their first five matches, with Raphinha and Yamal leading the scoring.
Barcelona sporting director Deco said Gordon was selected over Marcus Rashford because his style was better suited to Flick’s approach. Gordon has also made an effort to settle into the club, delivering his welcome speech in Spanish and including phrases in Catalan.
The move followed a mixed domestic season at Newcastle, where Gordon recorded six Premier League goals and two assists in 26 appearances, according to the report. His European form was stronger, with 10 goals in 12 Champions League appearances.
Five matches remain too early to establish whether Gordon has fully justified the fee or can sustain his influence across the season. For now, his contribution has come through creating goals and fitting into Barcelona’s wider attacking structure.
