Google’s Gemini app hits one billion monthly active users, matching ChatGPT
Usage data reveals heavy reliance on voice features and image generation as the AI assistant accelerates growth ahead of Pixel event

Google chief executive Sundar Pichai has announced that the company’s Gemini app has surpassed one billion monthly active users, cementing its status as one of the tech giant’s fastest-growing products. The achievement marks the 14th Google product to reach this significant user threshold, placing the AI assistant on par with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which hit the same figure in June.
The milestone follows closely on the heels of the company’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call, where Google reported over 950 million monthly users for the app. During that period, the company also noted that daily active users had tripled over the previous year, underscoring the rapid adoption of the technology across its ecosystem.
Usage patterns indicate a strong preference for interactive features, with 63 per cent of users engaging with the assistant via voice capabilities. The platform is also heavily utilised for creative tasks, generating more than 150 million images daily. Beyond the Android ecosystem, Google confirmed that the app has attracted more than 100 million active users on iOS, demonstrating its cross-platform appeal.
To support this expanding user base, Google continues to roll out new models, including Gemini 3.5 Flash, which the company states is designed to enhance coding and autonomous AI-agent tasks. The growth is further bolstered by deep integration across Google’s suite of products, including Search, Workspace, and Android, although the one billion figure refers specifically to the standalone Gemini app and excludes users of Google’s AI Mode in Search, which has also surpassed one billion users globally.
The announcement precedes the upcoming Made by Google event, where the company is expected to unveil additional Gemini-powered features for its Pixel devices. This strategic rollout aims to further embed artificial intelligence into consumer hardware as competition in the generative AI space intensifies.
