Google Wallet guide details fixes for payment and digital ID problems
Engadget’s troubleshooting guide covers contactless payment failures, card verification, device security and digital ID requirements.
Google Wallet users facing payment or digital ID problems may need to check phone settings, card eligibility and account verification, according to a troubleshooting guide published by Engadget.
For contactless payments, the guide recommends enabling NFC, unlocking the phone and holding it still against the terminal for several seconds. Moving the phone slightly may help locate its NFC antenna, while thick, metal or card-holding cases can interfere with the connection.
Card setup can fail if a bank or card is not supported, or if additional approval is required. Verification may depend on receiving an SMS code or using another method offered by the bank. Users can also check for an option to add the card through their bank’s app or online account.
Google Wallet may block contactless payments if a phone lacks Google Play Protect certification, a screen lock or required software security. Devices with modified software, an unlocked bootloader or a custom Android ROM may also fail the relevant checks.
Digital ID passes have separate requirements, including support for the country, device and account, Android 9 or later, NFC and a screen lock. Engadget’s guide also says users may need to scan an identity document’s NFC chip and complete additional verification.
The guide cautions that physical payment cards and identification should still be kept available because digital alternatives are not accepted everywhere. Bank, card, country and device eligibility may vary, and some failures may require assistance from a bank or account provider.
