Apple CarPlay Ultra remains limited as standard system reaches more than 800 models
Engadget says CarPlay Ultra extends Apple’s interface across a vehicle’s displays and integrates controls, but remains available only in some Aston Martin vehicles in the US and Canada.
Apple’s standard CarPlay brings selected iPhone apps to a vehicle’s infotainment screen, while CarPlay Ultra is designed to extend across the car’s displays and integrate more of its controls.
Engadget said standard CarPlay, introduced in 2014, is focused mainly on navigation, streaming and messaging. It is available in more than 800 vehicle models, according to the publication, and can connect to an iPhone by USB or wirelessly.
The standard system does not fully integrate with a vehicle’s native functions. Drivers may need to leave the CarPlay interface to adjust features such as climate control or driving modes, depending on the vehicle.
Apple announced the broader, multi-screen CarPlay concept in 2022. CarPlay Ultra can display and customise elements including the speedometer and fuel gauge, while also integrating controls for functions such as air conditioning and radio.
Availability remains narrow. Engadget reported that CarPlay Ultra is currently offered only in some Aston Martin vehicles in the United States and Canada, without specifying the supported models. The system requires an iPhone 12 or later and works wirelessly.
Porsche has previously teased support for CarPlay Ultra, but Engadget said that support has not materialised. Apple has indicated the system will expand to more vehicles, although no firm timeline has been provided.
