Google expands Gemini-assisted file organisation in Drive
Gemini can suggest where loose files and folders should go, but users must approve every change and the tool is limited to private folders.
Google is expanding a Gemini-powered feature that helps users organise files in Google Drive by suggesting where loose documents, photos and folders should be moved. It can also recommend creating new folders based on existing organisational patterns.
The feature, called Organise My Files, was tested from last autumn and began rolling out to Workspace users in June, according to Engadget. Gemini presents proposed changes for review, meaning it does not reorganise a Drive automatically.
Access is limited to users with a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription, as well as eligible Business, Enterprise and Education Workspace accounts. Availability and eligibility may vary by account type, market and subscription.
The tool works only with private folders. Users cannot use it to organise files or folders shared with colleagues, and workplace accounts cannot be used to organise personal files. Smart features in Google Workspace must also be enabled, a setting reportedly switched on by default in most supported markets.
Gemini can show previews of files suggested for moving, but it does not rename files. Engadget reported that the assistant does not appear to use document contents to generate its suggestions, although that point was not presented as a definitive technical statement. The feature’s usefulness may therefore depend on files already having clear names and a consistent folder structure.
