New suite integrates motion sensing and offline locking into Google Play Services

Google has integrated advanced theft-detection capabilities into Android via Google Play Services, utilising artificial intelligence to proactively secure devices. This update marks a shift from traditional, reactionary anti-theft protocols, such as shielding PIN entry or relying solely on location services, to a more robust, automated security suite.

Key features include Theft Detection Lock, which automatically locks the screen upon sensing sudden movement or snatching, and Offline Device Lock, which activates a countdown lock if a thief disconnects the device by removing the SIM or enabling Airplane Mode. Users can also utilise Remote Lock via android.com/lock to secure devices from any browser.

These tools are available on devices running Android 10 or newer, provided they have full Google Play Services. However, availability may vary on budget devices, Android tablets, or those lacking the full range of Google Play Services, which may not support some or all of the security suite features.

The implementation of Identity Check requires a screen lock, such as a PIN or biometric, to function. This feature periodically re-verifies user identity using biometrics or PIN, particularly when the device is away from regular locations like home or work. Navigation paths for enabling these features vary by manufacturer; Samsung users typically navigate via Settings to Security and Privacy, while Pixel users access similar options under Device Unlock.

The Remote Lock function operates across different networks and does not rely solely on the Find Hub app, ensuring devices can be secured even if moved to another network. Google explicitly requires a screen lock for Identity Check and other device-protection tools to function, ensuring data remains shielded even if the device is powered down or kept in Airplane Mode.
