GM to bring split-screen CarPlay and Android Auto to 2027 pickups
The redesigned interface will let drivers use phone-projection services while keeping vehicle gauges and native functions visible.
General Motors plans to introduce a split-screen infotainment interface supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups.
The system will allow drivers to access CarPlay and Android Auto while continuing to view vehicle gauges and other native functions. The approach is designed to prevent either service from taking over the full display.
Engadget reported that the new trucks will have about 60 inches of total screen space, including a passenger display capable of streaming video. GM plans to make the interface available on other models later, although it has not provided a timetable.
GM told Bloomberg it worked with Apple and Google on the system. The company said the redesigned interface responds to customer demand for the simplicity of CarPlay and Android Auto alongside quick access to vehicle functions.
The move marks a shift from GM’s previous plan to remove CarPlay and Android Auto from its electric vehicles and eventually its petrol-powered vehicles in favour of a bespoke infotainment system. GM has not said whether CarPlay will return to its electric vehicles.
