Tempers Flare In Joint Practice As Giants Pass Rush Overpowers Dolphins
NFL Training Camp

The joint practice between the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins on Thursday was defined by intense physicality, with multiple altercations occurring from the initial one-on-one drills through to the final team period. Giants head coach John Harbaugh described the session as having "rules of engagement that aren’t really the rules of the game," noting that if a player perceives another has gone over the line, intervention is often required to protect them.

The first significant confrontation required players to be separated during offensive line-defensive line one-on-ones, when Giants edge rusher Abdul Carter threw a punch at Dolphins offensive tackle Patrick Paul after the two became tangled. The hostility continued into 11-on-11 work, where Dolphins right tackle Austin Jackson took a swipe at Giants pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux. Thibodeaux responded with a shove that sent Jackson to the ground, while a separate scuffle between the Giants' offense and the Dolphins' defense took nearly a minute to break up, with Giants backup quarterback Jameis Winston repeatedly inserting himself into the pile.

On the field, the Giants' pass rush overwhelmed the Dolphins' offensive line, with the New York defense recording at least six would-be sacks during team periods. Defensive end Brian Burns stated the total was "definitely more than six," highlighting a unit he described as "dominant." Burns powered through Dolphins offensive lineman Caedan Wallace for a sack and forced a fumble from running back De’von Achane on another play.

Defensive end Chauncey Golston had the most productive individual day, recording three would-be sacks. Two of these came after he tracked down Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis following play-action fakes, while the third resulted from beating Dolphins guard Jonah Savaiinaea. Willis was swarmed almost immediately after carrying out several play actions, with Thibodeaux waiting for him in the backfield on one rep before the quarterback could reset.

Offensively, Giants rookie receiver Malachi Fields demonstrated promising chemistry with quarterback Jaxson Dart. Fields, a third-round pick out of Notre Dame, caught a deep ball down the left sideline during a team period and made another catch in the final hurry-up period to help move New York into field-goal range. Meanwhile, Dolphins second-round pick Jacob Rodriguez broke up an intermediate pass intended for Giants receiver Calvin Austin III and also recorded a would-be sack earlier in the practice.

The session occurred during the second week of Dolphins training camp, following nine practice sessions at the Baptist Health Training Complex and Hard Rock Stadium. General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan has finalised recent transactions, leading to the release of a projected 53-man roster for the Dolphins.
