Giants hold off Cardinals in extra-inning finish
San Francisco built a 3-0 lead before St Louis mounted a late comeback, but the Cardinals fell short in extra innings.
The San Francisco Giants defeated the St Louis Cardinals in extra innings in San Francisco, after surrendering most of an early three-run advantage.
Rafael Devers opened the scoring with a run-scoring double, while the Giants added further runs in the third and fifth innings. Devers contributed another double in the fifth before Bryce Eldredge’s double extended San Francisco’s lead to 3-0.
The Cardinals began their response in the sixth inning. According to Yahoo Sports, Alec Burleson hit a reported 431-foot home run into the bay to reduce the margin to 3-1.
St Louis moved within one run in the seventh when Nathan Church drove in Nolan Gorman with a double. The Cardinals had drawn level by the ninth inning, but could not complete the comeback.
Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy pitched into the seventh, allowing two earned runs over 6⅔ innings. He struck out four batters and issued two walks.
