Giants and Dolphins players removed after joint practice escalates

A series of altercations during a joint practice session between the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins has resulted in several players being removed from live drills. The incidents, which Giants head coach John Harbaugh described as typical for the current stage of training camp, occurred at the Dolphins' complex on Thursday.

Giants quarterback Jameis Winston, offensive lineman Jermaine Eluemunor, and Dolphins offensive lineman Austin Jackson were among those pulled from practice for disciplinary reasons. Harbaugh noted that Eluemunor was removed automatically after throwing a punch to an opponent's face, in accordance with the rules agreed upon by both teams.

Other notable incidents included second-year Giants edge rusher Abdul Carter taking a swing at Dolphins offensive lineman Patrick Paul. In a separate confrontation, Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux threw Jackson to the ground in retaliation after Jackson punched Giants rookie Arvell Reese.

Harbaugh downplayed the severity of the events, stating that joint practices lack the "guardrails" of a regular game. He explained that when players perceive an opponent has gone over the line, the situation can escalate, but he maintained that the session did not become out of control.

The NFL sent a memo to all 32 franchises prior to the start of training camp, emphasising that violence at joint practices would not be tolerated. The league warned that instances of player fighting could result in individual fines, club fines, or the loss of practice time.

This warning follows a similar incident involving the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints, who were each fined $500,000 two days prior for multiple fights during their own joint practice. The NFL is expected to review footage from the Giants-Dolphins session to determine if penalties are warranted.
