A report published by Yahoo Sports, originally appearing in The Sporting News, said Chelsea Janes expected the decision to rest largely with Stanton. Janes wrote that the Yankees would likely give him an opportunity to return if he wanted to keep playing, although no such team decision has been confirmed.
Stanton remains well-liked in the Yankees’ clubhouse and is regarded as a respected veteran. But his injury history, including chronic elbow pain and concerns about his legs, has limited his recent contribution and raised questions about whether a further season is practical.
He has appeared in only 24 games this year and hit three home runs. The previous year, he hit 24 home runs in 77 games, underscoring the playing-time obstacle facing any attempt to extend his career.
Stanton is reportedly 44 home runs short of 500, but reaching that mark would require substantial playing time and could take multiple seasons. Janes said she would not be surprised if he retired after the season, while stressing that she had not heard anything indicating retirement was imminent.
No decision has been reported, and it remains unclear whether Stanton will retire, return to the Yankees or continue his career elsewhere.
