Why is Georgia star Tre Phelps not playing vs Mississippi State in super regional?
Star third baseman misses Game 1 due to ejection for unsportsmanlike conduct in regional final

Georgia baseball will be without star third baseman Tre Phelps for the opening game of the Athens Super Regional against Mississippi State. The All-SEC first-team selection is serving a one-game suspension following his ejection for unsportsmanlike conduct during the team’s previous contest against Liberty in the Athens Regional final.

The incident occurred in the sixth inning on May 31, shortly after Phelps hit a go-ahead two-run home run to break a tie. According to reports from the Athens Banner-Herald, umpires ejected Phelps for taunting the Liberty dugout and the opposing first baseman while rounding the bases. Georgia was trailing for most of the game before Phelps’ intervention shifted the momentum.

Under NCAA regulations, player ejections for unsportsmanlike conduct trigger an automatic suspension, a rule that distinguishes player penalties from those applied to coaching staff. Georgia head coach Wes Johnson was also ejected from the Liberty game for arguing with the umpires regarding Phelps’ dismissal, but he faces no mandatory suspension. This procedural distinction mirrors previous incidents involving Mississippi State, where head coach Brian O’Connor was ejected against Texas earlier in the season without receiving a suspension.

Phelps enters the postseason with significant offensive production, holding a .370 batting average, 19 home runs, 57 runs batted in, and 77 runs scored. His absence represents a notable loss for Georgia, which is ranked No. 3 with a 49-12 record. They face a No. 14 Mississippi State squad (43-17) in a best-of-three series where the winner advances to the College World Series.

The Super Regional schedule begins with Game 1 on Saturday, June 6, at 10 a.m. CT on ESPN. Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday, June 7, at 11 a.m. CT, also on ESPN. A potential Game 3 will be played on Monday, June 8, at a time to be determined, should the series remain tied after two contests.
