Georgia Bulldogs secure 2026 College World Series berth after Athens Super Regional victory
The Bulldogs defeated Mississippi State 11-9 in Game 2, advancing to Omaha to face the winner of the Texas-Oregon series.

The Georgia Bulldogs have secured their place in the 2026 College World Series following a decisive 11-9 victory over Mississippi State in Game 2 of the Athens Super Regional on Sunday. The win, which concludes the regional series, was sealed in the 10th inning by a two-run home run from Daniel Jackson, building on a 13-12 triumph in Game 1 on Saturday.
The series was characterised by high-scoring offensive displays from both sides, with Georgia’s shortstop Kolby Branch recording three hits in four at-bats, including two critical home runs. Manager Wes Johnson highlighted the team’s resilience and the culmination of their hard work, noting that the players responded to the physical and mental challenges presented throughout the series.
Relief pitcher Justin Byrd played a pivotal role in securing the final victory, pitching the ninth and 10th innings to shut down the Mississippi State offense in the closing frames. Both teams struggled on the mound during the regional, but Byrd’s performance in the late innings proved decisive for Georgia.
The Bulldogs will now travel to Omaha, Nebraska, for the College World Series next weekend, where they will face the winner of the Austin Super Regional. Georgia is aiming to secure its second National Championship in program history, having navigated a challenging path through the regional rounds.
In the concurrent Austin Super Regional, Texas currently leads Oregon 1-0 in the series. Game 2 of that matchup is scheduled to conclude later on Sunday, with the winner set to join Georgia in the national tournament.
