Three years after Israel launched its war on Gaza in October 2023, repeated displacement has left much of the territory’s population living in tent camps, according to an Al Jazeera report published on 7 October 2026.

The report describes canvas and nylon shelters spread across beaches, former agricultural land and vacant lots. It says most residents have been forced to move repeatedly to escape fighting and evacuation orders.

Al Jazeera estimates that more than one in 10 people from Gaza’s pre-war population has been killed or wounded. The supplied report provides no methodology for that estimate.

A ceasefire in 2025 halted large-scale offensives and the heaviest bombardment, the report says, though strikes have continued. It says restrictions on construction materials are preventing many people from rebuilding.

Plans for large-scale reconstruction have stalled while Israel and Hamas remain at odds over disarming the group and the withdrawal of Israeli forces, according to Al Jazeera.
