Gauff survives Andreeva test to reach US Open semi-final

Coco Gauff has reached the US Open semi-finals after overcoming Mirra Andreeva 2-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-2 in a quarter-final defined by momentum shifts and pressure points.

The fourth seed was outplayed in a 26-minute opening set but recovered to force a deciding set. Andreeva twice failed to hold breaks in the second set before Gauff won a 16-point tie-break, saving two match points in the process.

Gauff, the 2023 US Open and 2025 French Open champion, completed the turnaround with a controlled final set. The result gives her consecutive Grand Slam semi-final appearances and her first last-four appearance in New York since winning the title in 2023.

She will meet Elena Rybakina, who defeated Zheng Qinwen 3-6 6-1 6-4. The second seed recovered after losing the opening set and secured the world number one ranking for the first time by reaching the semi-finals, according to BBC Sport.

Rybakina, the Australian Open champion, is now two wins from a second major title of the season. The semi-final will also form part of a women’s singles draw in which all four top seeds have reached the last four for the first time at a major since Wimbledon in 2009.
