Lausanne-based Fusionality has raised a $3.7 million pre-seed round from Founderful and Playfair to develop control systems and simulation environments for fusion power startups.

Founded this year by former Google DeepMind colleagues Federico Felici and Jonas Buchli, Fusionality is initially targeting magnetic-confinement devices. Felici is the company’s chief executive and Buchli its chief technology officer.

The company plans to build modular control technologies that startups can adapt to different reactor designs. Fusion systems must manage plasma temperature, shape and fuel density, while magnetic confinement uses powerful electromagnets to contain the fuel.

Fusionality’s founders previously worked on artificial intelligence control for an experimental tokamak at EPFL and Google DeepMind. Felici told TechCrunch that AI would initially complement and optimise parts of fusion-control systems, rather than control an entire reactor.

The seven-person company has not disclosed which technologies it will develop first. Its funding is also described as CHF3 million, with the currency represented by the dollar figure not specified in the source.
