Liverpool to sell minority stake to consortium including Jeff Bezos
1892 Holdings led by Amit Bhatia acquires minority share in Premier League club

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has reached a definitive agreement to sell a minority stake in Liverpool FC to the 1892 Holdings consortium. The transaction, which involves an estimated one-third share of the club, marks a significant shift in the ownership structure of the English Premier League side.

The consortium is led by former Queens Park Rangers chairman Amit Bhatia and includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos through his K5 Sports Fund. Other investors in the group comprise the Mittal Family Trusts and EE Capital. While the deal represents Bezos’s first confirmed foray into sports ownership, he will not hold a seat on the club’s board.

Under the terms of the agreement, FSG will retain its majority share and operational control of Liverpool. Bhatia is set to join the board as vice chairman, alongside Elaine Saverin from EE Capital and Bryan Baum from K5 Sports. FSG president Mike Gordon stated that the consortium shared the group’s long-term philosophy and that their perspective would complement the club’s existing foundation.

The investment is valued between £5 billion and £6 billion. This capital injection follows Bezos’s recent filing to sell 15 million Amazon shares, valued at approximately £3.1 billion. The funds are not intended to address financial needs or expand the transfer budget, with no new or separate transfer budget associated with the deal.

Liverpool reported record revenues of £703 million for the 2024-25 financial year. The club, which has won the English championship a joint-record 20 times, finished fifth in the Premier League last season. They are scheduled to begin their new campaign against Newcastle United on August 23 under new manager Andoni Iraola.

The announcement has drawn scrutiny from fan groups, including Spirit of Shankly. Bhatia described the opportunity to partner with the club as a privilege, citing a deep belief in Liverpool’s leadership and its continued success. The transaction underscores the growing involvement of global technology investors in traditional sports assets.
