Tour of Portugal Suspended After British Cyclist Finlay Tarling Dies in Collision
The 19-year-old rider, competing for the NSN Development Team, was killed during the Melgaco to Fafe leg, prompting expressions of condolence from Portuguese leadership.
The Tour of Portugal has been suspended following the death of 19-year-old British cyclist Finlay Tarling during the eighth stage of the race. Race organisers and Tarling’s NSN Development Team confirmed the fatality on Friday, stating that the rider died following a serious accident on the route between Melgaco and Fafe.
The incident occurred with approximately 20 kilometres remaining in the stage. Portuguese broadcaster RTP, which was televising the event, reported that Tarling was involved in a head-on collision with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The broadcaster noted that the vehicle was not connected to the event.
Organisers announced the suspension of racing shortly after the crash. In a statement released on social media, officials confirmed the cancellation of the scheduled podium ceremony as a sign of respect and mourning for the young rider.
The NSN Development Team, which is co-owned by former Barcelona football star Andres Iniesta, issued a statement expressing deep sorrow. The team offered condolences to Tarling’s parents and his brother, Josh Tarling, who rides for the Netcompany-Ineos team.
"Fin was a much-loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many," the team said. "He will be deeply missed."
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also extended his condolences to the family and the team. Writing on the platform X, Montenegro said the news of Tarling’s death had left the country "deeply shaken".
Tarling, who had previously represented Great Britain on both road and track circuits, was competing for the NSN Development Team at the time of the accident. The Portuguese Cycling Federation has confirmed the halt to the race proceedings.
