France arrests hundreds of rioters nationwide as PSG win Champions League
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez condemns violence as “absolutely unacceptable” after clashes mar Champions League celebrations

French authorities have detained 416 individuals nationwide in the wake of violent clashes triggered by Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory over Arsenal. The French Ministry of the Interior confirmed the figures early Sunday, with 283 of those arrests occurring in Paris. The unrest followed PSG’s 4-3 penalty shootout win against Arsenal in Budapest, securing the club’s second consecutive European title.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the disorder as “absolutely unacceptable,” reporting that seven police officers were wounded during the disturbances. Damage was recorded to six vehicles, two businesses, and a bus shelter near the Champs-Elysees. Nunez stated that a “very robust, very solid system” was in place to curb violence, emphasising the government’s responsibility to guarantee a calm and secure festive celebration.

Approximately 22,000 police officers were deployed across France to manage the celebrations, including 8,000 stationed in Paris. This significant security presence was implemented following unrest that marred PSG’s Champions League win the previous year. In anticipation of potential disturbances, shops boarded up windows along the Champs-Elysees, and public transport services, including tram lines and metro stations, were halted or restricted in certain areas to minimise risks.

Clashes erupted near PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where tens of thousands of supporters had gathered. Police reported that fireworks were thrown at officers, prompting the use of tear gas to disperse crowds. A bakery and a restaurant were damaged in the vicinity, and authorities seized approximately 24 flares and 100 fireworks. Police also pushed back around 150 individuals who attempted to enter through stadium gates and cleared a barricade erected with rental bicycles.

In the capital, supporters stormed the Boulevard Peripherique, halting traffic and setting off flares. About 20,000 people converged on the Champs-Elysees, where a bus shelter was destroyed. The violence drew sharp criticism from political figures, including Marine Le Pen, who stated on social media that “only in France does a football club’s victory spark riots.” It remains unclear how many of the 416 detained individuals have been remanded in custody to face further investigation.

Despite the unrest, PSG players are scheduled to take a victory parade on the Champ de Mars on Sunday afternoon, followed by a reception at the Elysee Palace with President Emmanuel Macron. The match coincided with other major events in Paris, including performances by singer Aya Nakamura and rapper Damso, as well as the ongoing French Open tennis tournament.
