Florida State Seminoles helmet ranked fourth in USA TODAY Sports top 25 list
The iconic Seminole spear design, attributed to Bobby Bowden, secures a top-five position in the latest national ranking, placing Florida State behind Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State.

USA TODAY Sports has released its annual ranking of the top 25 helmets in college football, placing the Florida State Seminoles at number four. The assessment, conducted by writers Jordan Mendoza and Craig Meyer, positions the Seminoles behind Michigan, which took the top spot, followed by Notre Dame in second and Ohio State in third.
The ranking highlights the enduring legacy of the Seminole spear design, a visual element introduced by former coach Bobby Bowden. According to the publication, the spear encapsulates the team’s nickname and remains one of the most recognisable designs in the sport, often cited as more distinctive than the Chief Osceola logo. The combination of the spear and tomahawk stickers is credited with creating one of the most innovative and identifiable helmet configurations in college athletics.
Florida State’s uniform and helmet combinations have been a staple of the program since the 1940s, establishing a brand identity that extends beyond the field. The program’s commercial appeal was recognised in 2025, when Florida State was noted as a top-five most in-demand apparel brand in college sports. This sustained market presence underscores the institutional strength of the Seminoles’ visual branding.
In the broader context of the ranking, other Florida-based programs also featured in the list. The University of Florida was ranked at number 11, while the University of Miami placed at number 12. These positions reflect the competitive landscape of helmet design and brand recognition across the nation’s major collegiate programs.
The recognition comes as the Seminoles prepare for the upcoming season. Florida State opens its 2026 campaign against the New Mexico State Aggies on 29 August. The match is scheduled to commence at 7:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on the CW Network, providing a platform for the team to debut its celebrated visual identity to a national audience.
