FIFA rejects Morocco claim over 2030 World Cup final
Football’s governing body says the final venue remains undecided, despite a reported claim by Morocco’s federation president.
FIFA has rejected a claim that Morocco has secured the right to host the 2030 World Cup final, saying the venue has not yet been decided.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation president, Fouzi Lekjaa, reportedly told a political rally that the final would be held in Benslimane, at the proposed Hassan II Stadium near Casablanca.
FIFA told news outlets the host venue would be selected “in due course”, without specifying when or how the decision would be made.
Morocco is due to co-host the 2030 tournament with Spain and Portugal. The event will be only the second World Cup staged in Africa, after South Africa hosted the 2010 tournament.
The proposed King Hassan II Stadium is being built near Casablanca and is planned to have 115,000 seats. Its completion and eligibility to host the final have not been confirmed.
FIFA has previously denied British media reports alleging that the final venue was linked to political support for Gianni Infantino’s re-election campaign.
