FIFA Confirms Tri-Nation Opening Ceremonies for 2026 World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature three distinct opening ceremonies across Mexico, Canada, and the United States, with Italian producer Marco Balich overseeing the production and a focus on educational fundraising.

FIFA has finalised the lineup for the opening ceremonies of the 2026 World Cup, confirming that Shakira and Burna Boy will perform the official tournament song, *Dai Dai*, at the Mexico City event. The performance is scheduled to precede the opening match between co-hosts Mexico and South Africa on Thursday. The governing body has structured the tournament’s commencement around three separate ceremonies, one for each of the North American host nations, with each show taking place approximately 90 minutes before kickoff.
The Mexico City ceremony, produced by Italian director Marco Balich, will feature a diverse roster of artists including Alejandro Fernandez, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Angeles Azules, Mana, and Tyla. Balich, known for his work on the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics opening ceremony, is overseeing all three events. FIFA has indicated that additional artists will be announced for the ceremonies in Canada and the United States, expanding the initial lineups.
In Canada, Alanis Morissette and Michael Bublé will headline the Toronto ceremony on June 12, ahead of the match between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The United States ceremony, also scheduled for June 12 in Los Angeles, will feature Katy Perry, LISA, Rema, Anitta, and Future. These performances will take place before the US faces Paraguay, completing the trio of national curtain-raisers that mark the tournament’s start.
A significant component of the opening events is the financial objective tied to the tournament song. *Dai Dai* is intended to raise $100 million for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, aligning the cultural spectacle with the organisation’s broader policy goals regarding global education. This initiative underscores FIFA’s strategy to leverage the World Cup’s platform for institutional fundraising and social impact.
Shakira is also confirmed to perform at a Super Bowl-style half-time show for the World Cup final, alongside Madonna and the boy band BTS. The selection of performers echoes historical precedents, such as Diana Ross’s appearance at the 1994 World Cup in Chicago, where she famously missed a penalty kick as part of the show. The 2026 ceremonies represent a complex logistical and cultural undertaking, coordinated across three sovereign jurisdictions under a single production framework.
