The International Mathematical Union awarded the Fields Medal to four mathematicians on Thursday during the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. The recipients, selected for outstanding discoveries by researchers under the age of 40, are Hong Wang and Yu Deng from China, John Pardon from the United States, and Jacob Tsimerman from Canada.

The prize, often described as the Nobel Prize of mathematics, comprises a gold medallion bearing the likeness of Archimedes and 15,000 Canadian dollars. This year’s awards highlight significant shifts in the field’s demographic and geographic landscape, with the United States maintaining its record for the most laureates while Chinese mathematicians secure two of the four honours.

Hong Wang, aged 35, becomes only the third woman to receive the honour since its inception in 1936, following Maryam Mirzakhani in 2014 and Maryna Viazovska in 2022. Wang, who teaches at New York University in the United States and in France, was recognised for solving the Kakeya conjecture. The problem, originally posed by Japanese mathematician Soichi Kakeya in 1917, had stumped experts for more than a century. Working alongside colleague Josh Zahl, Wang determined the smallest area swept out by rotating a line segment in three-dimensional space.

Yu Deng, who teaches at the University of Chicago, specialises in complex algebraic geometry and analytic number theory. During a press briefing, Deng described the recognition as a great honour, placing his name alongside mathematicians he has long admired. His win underscores China’s growing prominence in the global mathematics community in recent decades.

The ceremony took place as the mathematical community grapples with the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into research. In June, a group of mathematicians issued the Leiden Declaration, warning that current AI techniques can produce plausible but unreliable or incorrect arguments that are difficult to distinguish from valid proofs. The declaration called for frameworks and safeguards, citing concerns over the consequences of large-scale AI investment.

Despite these warnings, perspectives on AI’s role vary among the new laureates. Jacob Tsimerman, aged 38, stated he will soon begin a position at OpenAI in its safety division, noting that the mathematical profession as it exists now may not survive in its current form. Conversely, Deng expressed optimism that AI will assist rather than replace mathematicians.

Pardon, aged 37, represents the United States’ continued dominance in the field. Tsimerman, who cited a childhood puzzle about a toaster as his initial inspiration for mathematics, acknowledged the changing landscape. “I think the world is changing,” Tsimerman told journalists, reflecting the broader uncertainty surrounding the profession’s future.

The Fields Medal is awarded every four years, and this cycle’s recipients were chosen at a unique moment where human calculation is being challenged by AI’s potential to outpace traditional methods. While some experts view these developments with caution, others see them as tools that will reshape, rather than dismantle, mathematical research.
