Fetterman video at Republican convention renews questions over Democratic allegiance

Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman appeared in a video on the first day of the Republican Party’s two-day midterm convention in Dallas, introducing Republican Senator Dave McCormick.
Fetterman described himself as a “common-sense Democrat” and said he would “reject the extremes and socialism”. His appearance came as Republicans placed President Donald Trump at the centre of their strategy for the November elections.
The video renewed criticism from Democratic colleagues over Fetterman’s position within the party. Representative Brendan Boyle again questioned the senator’s allegiance after the appearance.
Fetterman has positioned himself as an outsider within the Democratic Party and has expressed strong support for Israel. He has denied plans to switch parties, saying he will remain a Democrat.
The appearance does not change Fetterman’s formal party affiliation. He is not due to face re-election until 2028, while Republicans hold narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress, according to Al Jazeera Global News.
