Fernandez move to Manchester City cements joint British record
The £125 million signing signals a major restructuring of the champions’ midfield following the departures of four key players.
Argentina international Enzo Fernandez has completed a transfer from Chelsea to Manchester City for a fee of £125 million ($169m), a sum that equals the British transfer record. The 25-year-old midfielder finalised the deal on deadline day, matching the amount Liverpool paid Newcastle for Alexander Isak last summer. The transaction was confirmed by City via a video on social media platform X after a negotiation process that stretched to the final minutes of the summer window.
The move represents a significant institutional shift for Manchester City, which is rebuilding its central midfield following the departures of Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Nico Gonzalez, and Tijjani Reijnders. City manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with Fernandez at Chelsea, was a driving force behind the acquisition. The Italian manager took on the role of succeeding Pep Guardiola at the Etihad, and the signing is viewed as a key component in stabilising the squad’s creative core.
Fernandez will join a revamped midfield unit that includes England international Elliot Anderson and Moroccan Ayyoub Bouaddi. Together, the trio represents a central midfield investment of more than £300 million ($405.4m). This financial commitment underscores the club’s strategy to maintain competitive depth in a position that has seen substantial turnover in recent seasons.
The transfer also highlights the broader financial dynamics within the Premier League. Chelsea, who originally signed Fernandez from Benfica for £106 million in 2023, are capitalising on a historic cycle of player sales. The club has simultaneously agreed a record £117 million deal to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, further illustrating the scale of current transfer market activity.
Fernandez’s recent performance on the international stage added to his appeal. He scored twice in Argentina’s run to the 2026 World Cup final, including a goal against England in the semi-final. Although Argentina lost the final 1-0, Fernandez’s experience in two World Cup finals and his previous victories in the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea were cited by City director of football Hugo Viana as evidence of his professional quality.
In a statement released upon the completion of the deal, Fernandez described Manchester City as a club built for success. He noted the quality present across the squad and expressed a desire to learn from his new teammates. The signing marks the end of a period of uncertainty for the midfielder, who had previously bid farewell to Chelsea fans on Instagram ahead of the deadline.
