Fact-check: Viral video of Iran downing US Apache helicopter is AI-generated
Social media footage claiming to show the destruction of a US Army Apache over the Strait of Hormuz contains multiple technical and visual inconsistencies, confirming it was fabricated by artificial intelligence.
A video circulating on social media purporting to show the Iranian military shooting down a US Army Apache attack helicopter has been identified as artificial intelligence-generated. The clip, shared by a pro-government Iranian user on X (formerly Twitter), amassed more than 5 million views following claims by US President Donald Trump that an Apache was downed during a patrol over the Strait of Hormuz on June 9.
Detailed analysis of the footage reveals significant discrepancies that contradict the reality of the equipment involved. The soldier depicted in the video, identified as Iranian military personnel, is shown wearing an insignia featuring the US flag on his right shoulder. Furthermore, the weapon system portrayed does not align with any known defence system in the Iranian arsenal. The launcher’s grip and targeting mechanism differ from standard Man-Portable Air-Defense Systems (MANPADS) such as the Misagh-1, Misagh-2, Misagh-3, or Igla. For instance, the Misagh-1 is equipped with two grips, whereas the video displays only one.
The silhouette of the downed aircraft also fails to match the profile of a real Apache helicopter. The AI-generated aircraft lacks the square-shaped engines on both sides of the fuselage and the four distinct weapon hardpoints, two on each side, that are characteristic of the actual aircraft. These features were clearly visible in a 2024 US Army flight demonstration in Chicago, highlighting the technical inaccuracies of the synthetic video.
The social media user who shared the footage claimed the Apache was worth “a billion dollars,” a figure that is factually incorrect. According to US Department of Defense documents, the unit cost of an Apache ranges between $26 million and just over $38 million, approximately €22.5 million to €33 million. The video’s assertion that a $150 weapon destroyed a billion-dollar aircraft is therefore based on false premises regarding both the cost and the event itself.
This misinformation emerges against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions, including recent reciprocal strikes involving US Tomahawk missiles and Israeli operations on Iranian targets. Iran has also threatened to target vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, with its Khatam al-Anbiya command previously announcing the closure of the waterway to commercial shipping. The viral nature of the AI video underscores the challenges of verifying information in an environment marked by military uncertainty and economic strain.
