ESPN’s early College Football Playoff field puts LSU in title frame

ESPN’s first College Football Playoff projection of the season has LSU, Texas, Georgia, Alabama and Ole Miss occupying five of the projected 12 places from the SEC. Ohio State, Notre Dame, Indiana and Oregon are also included, alongside Miami as the projected ACC representative, Texas Tech as the projected Big 12 champion and Boise State as the highest-ranked Group of 6 team.

LSU strengthened its early case with a 51–10 win over Clemson, producing what ESPN described as one of the most complete performances of Week 1. The result has moved the Tigers into the national title discussion, although the broader question of whether LSU is that strong or Clemson is that poor remains unresolved.

Miami emerged as the ACC’s leading candidate after beating Stanford, while the conference opened 1–5 against other Power 4 opponents. ESPN’s projection gives the Hurricanes an early advantage in a league whose strength remains difficult to assess.

Texas Tech’s position depends on the Big 12 champion receiving a place in the projected field. Its 33–10 win over Abilene Christian offered limited evidence of playoff-level quality, with upcoming games against Oregon State and Houston providing more substantial tests.

Several teams remain under scrutiny, including Louisville, Kansas State, USC, Tennessee and Memphis. Notre Dame’s projected position is strengthened by the rule guaranteeing it a playoff place if it finishes in the selection committee’s top 12, while Boise State is projected to qualify as the highest-ranked Group of 6 team rather than necessarily as a conference champion.

The picture could shift quickly through the next set of games. LSU faces Ole Miss, Miami meets Notre Dame, USC plays Oregon, Memphis travels to Boise State and Michigan hosts Oklahoma. ESPN’s projected field and seeding are an early assessment, not official playoff selections.
