Commanders' Sonny Styles projected to lead rookies in key stat in 2026
Ohio State product expected to assume every-down role in Washington defence

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters and his draft team identified a clear strategic fit when they selected Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles with the seventh overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The move aligns with Peters’ stated objective to accelerate the age and speed of the franchise’s defensive unit, a shift that has drawn immediate statistical attention from industry analysts.

ESPN’s Mike Clay has projected Styles to lead all 2026 rookies in total tackles, estimating a figure of 123 for the upcoming season. This projection places Styles on a trajectory that would see him record the sixth-highest tackle total for a rookie over the past decade, underscoring the expectation that he will be deployed as a near-every-down player in the middle of the defence.

The anticipated workload is designed to facilitate a transition in the Commanders’ linebacker corps, with Styles expected to replace veteran Bobby Wagner. Wagner recorded 140 tackles in his own rookie season and finished with 162 tackles in his final year with the team, setting a high benchmark for production in the same role Styles is now projected to fill.

Styles’ collegiate career at Ohio State provides the foundation for this projected workload. After switching from safety to linebacker, he recorded 100 tackles and six sacks as a junior, contributing to a National Championship run. His versatility, including the ability to drop back into the middle third of the field, is cited as a key factor in his potential to generate high tackle volumes.

Contextual data from recent seasons highlights the rarity of such high-volume rookie performances. While no rookies reached 100 tackles in 2023 or 2024, three players achieved the milestone in 2025. The record for the past decade remains with Shaquille Leonard, who recorded 163 tackles in 2018, with only four rookies in that span reaching 125 tackles.

Other 2026 draft selections are also facing defined roles that may influence their statistical output. Reese, selected fifth overall, has an ambiguous role regarding edge versus off-ball linebacker duties. Meanwhile, second-round pick Allen has a clearer path to a full-time role due to the Indianapolis Colts’ linebacker situation, and first-rounders Downs and Thieneman are positioned as every-down starters for Dallas and Chicago respectively.

The projection also notes historical trends for defensive backs, with Jalen Pitre holding the record for most tackles by a rookie safety over the past decade at 147 in 2022. Only 12 other rookies reached 80 tackles in that position during the same period, with just three hitting the 100-tackle mark.
