ESPN flags Mahomes comeback and unsettled NFL storylines for Week 1

ESPN’s preview of Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season points to a campaign shaped by injury recoveries, uncertain quarterback plans and emerging players. The assessment draws on conversations with unnamed league sources and training-camp observations, with several key developments still unconfirmed.

Patrick Mahomes is expected to play for Kansas City against Denver after recovering from an ACL tear. ESPN also highlights possible comebacks for Washington’s Jayden Daniels and Minnesota’s Kyler Murray, while noting that Mahomes is among the candidates for Comeback Player of the Year.

The Giants, Jaguars and 49ers are identified as potential surprise contenders. New York won four games last season but is backed by a stronger assessment of its line play and the possible return of receiver Malik Nabers. Jacksonville went 13–4 and won the AFC South last season, while San Francisco’s prospects are linked to its veteran roster and ability to stay healthy.

Quarterback decisions remain central elsewhere.
