Enceladus narrowly favoured for 250th St Leger at Doncaster
Sky Sports Racing has identified Joseph O’Brien’s Enceladus as its narrow selection for Saturday’s Betfred St Leger, with Christmas Day and Pierre Bonnard among the leading contenders.
Joseph O’Brien’s Enceladus has been given a narrow preference by Sky Sports Racing ahead of Saturday’s 250th Betfred St Leger at Doncaster, the latest running of the world’s oldest Classic.
Enceladus arrives after winning the Group 3 Gordon Stakes at Goodwood and is considered capable of further improvement over the longer distance. Billy Loughnane is booked to ride after Dylan Brown McMonagle’s fall-related absence.
Christmas Day is seeking to become the first Derby winner since Reference Point in 1987 to complete the double. He won this year’s Derby on soft ground and has remained consistent, although his latest meeting with stablemate Pierre Bonnard ended with the latter finishing ahead in the Great Voltigeur.
Pierre Bonnard is regarded as a serious contender after reversing the form with Christmas Day at York. Both horses are by Camelot, identified by Sky Sports Racing as a stamina influence, while Christmas Day’s prospects may depend partly on conditions at Doncaster.
Sky Sports Racing expects the O’Brien family’s runners to feature prominently. Highwayman is also identified as a possible fourth-place finisher, while the final result and the extent to which the runners handle the distance remain unresolved until the race.
