Jayden Daniels Takes Responsibility for Commanders’ Costly Celebration Penalty
The Washington quarterback said he failed to prepare the offence for a likely two-point attempt after Stefon Diggs’ touchdown celebration penalty.
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has accepted responsibility for a preparation lapse that affected the team’s 24–22 season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Stefon Diggs’ touchdown cut Philadelphia’s lead to 17–15 early in the fourth quarter, but a 15-yard penalty for his celebration near the goal post forced Washington to attempt an extra point instead of preparing for a two-point conversion.
Daniels said Washington likely would have gone for two had the penalty not changed the situation. He attributed the failure to reiterate that plan in the huddle to himself as the team’s quarterback and captain.
The touchdown was Daniels’ first scoring pass of the season. Washington later had another chance to tie the game with a two-point conversion but failed to convert.
Fox Sports reported Daniels’ comments after the game, in which he said the offence needed to be more disciplined in its handling of situational football. The defeat left the Commanders 0–1.
