El Niño and Saharan Dust Stifle Atlantic Hurricane Activity to Lowest Levels Since 2013
With Accumulated Cyclone Energy at just 23 per cent of the seasonal average, forecasters warn that despite the lull, intense hurricanes remain a risk.

The Atlantic hurricane season is currently experiencing one of its quietest periods in over a decade, driven by the combined impact of a rapidly intensifying El Niño and dry, dusty air from the Sahara Desert. According to data published by WIRED, only three weak named storms have formed since the season began in June, with forecasters predicting fewer than ten for the entire year. This marks the lowest activity levels since at least 2013, as unfavorable atmospheric conditions stifle tropical development across the basin.
El Niño conditions have accelerated faster than anticipated this summer, with sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central Pacific reaching anomalies of up to 4 degrees Celsius above normal. While the threshold for El Niño is typically 0.5 degrees Celsius above average, these unprecedented heat levels have triggered widespread convection in the Pacific. This activity has altered upper-level wind patterns, generating strong wind shear over the Atlantic that disrupts the structure of budding thunderstorms and prevents them from organising into tropical systems.
The suppression of storm activity is further compounded by a lackluster West African monsoon, which has delivered below-average rainfall in key regions such as Sierra Leone and Guinea. Concurrently, persistent intrusions of dry, dusty air blowing from the Sahara Desert act as an atmospheric lid, suppressing thunderstorm development across the Atlantic. These factors have resulted in an Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) of just 3.1, representing only 23 per cent of the average for mid-August. In contrast, the western Pacific typhoon season has been unusually active, with four storms reaching Category 5 equivalent strength by early August.
Despite the overall lull, meteorological experts caution that El Niño years do not guarantee a lack of intense hurricanes. Historical precedents include devastating storms such as Camille, Ivan, Charley, Michael, Idalia, and Lee, all of which occurred during El Niño conditions. Recent activity from Tropical Storm Arthur, which may have broken Louisiana’s 24-hour rainfall record with more than 29 inches of rain near Cottonport, serves as a reminder that dangerous weather events can still emerge from the suppressed environment.
Coastal residents and emergency management agencies are advised to maintain vigilance and keep storm plans in place. While the probability of frequent storms is low, the potential for high-impact, intense hurricanes remains a significant risk factor that requires ongoing monitoring of forecasts and preparedness measures.
