Drake Maye carries Super Bowl lessons into Patriots’ 2026 opener
After a record-setting regular season and a difficult postseason, New England quarterback Drake Maye is targeting sharper decisions and greater leadership against Seattle.
Drake Maye will lead the New England Patriots into their 2026 season opener against the Seattle Seahawks with last season’s Super Bowl defeat still shaping his preparation. The rematch gives Maye an immediate test as he seeks to build on an exceptional 2025 regular season.
Maye finished as the NFL’s Most Valuable Player runner-up, leading the league in Total QBR and completion percentage. He set or tied four Patriots records, including a 72 per cent completion rate and eight consecutive games with a passer rating of at least 100.
His postseason performance was less effective. Maye recorded eight turnovers, was sacked 21 times and finished with a Total QBR of 40.0. He has since focused on making quicker decisions after the snap, avoiding unnecessary sacks and recognising when an incompletion is the better option.
The 2026 campaign is also Maye’s first opportunity to play consecutive seasons in the same offensive system. Coaches and teammates have reported increased confidence in meetings and training camp, while Maye has worked to take greater ownership of the offence and communicate more directly with teammates.
New England has added support around him, acquiring A.J. Brown from Philadelphia and bringing in Romeo Doubs. The Patriots also signed Alijah Vera-Tucker and moved Jared Wilson to centre, changes intended to strengthen an offensive line that struggled during the playoffs.
ESPN reported that Maye views the Super Bowl loss as motivation to improve and return to the championship stage. Whether he can reproduce his 2025 regular-season form, however, will be tested from the outset when Seattle hosts New England on Wednesday.
