Dowman double sends Arsenal into Carabao Cup fourth round
The 16-year-old scored in each half as Arsenal beat Ipswich Town 4-2, prompting strong praise from manager Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal advanced to the Carabao Cup fourth round with a 4-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road, led by a historic performance from 16-year-old Max Dowman.
Dowman opened the scoring with an individual effort after collecting possession, evading an Ipswich challenge and finishing. He added a second after half-time with a composed finish.
Yahoo Sports reported that Dowman became only the second 16-year-old to score a brace for a Premier League side in any competition, following Wayne Rooney’s double for Everton against Wrexham in 2002. The statistical claim is attributed to the report.
The teenager had not played in the Premier League this season before the match. Arteta described his performance as “unbelievable” and said Dowman was “a joy to watch”, while adding that Arsenal recognised the talent within the squad.
The result was Arsenal’s third consecutive away victory, following wins at Napoli and Sunderland. Arteta also praised the travelling supporters for helping create an atmosphere that reflected the club’s desire to progress in a competition it wants to win.
