Dortmund’s Karetsas taken to hospital after Champions League collapse
Konstantinos Karetsas was treated on the field and stretchered off for further tests as Dortmund won 3–2.
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas was taken to hospital after collapsing during his Champions League debut against Villarreal.
The 18-year-old Greek international passed the ball to a teammate before signalling distress to the referee and sitting on the pitch. He was treated while lying down and later stretchered from the field.
Dortmund said Karetsas had experienced “circulatory problems” and was “doing well under the circumstances” while being taken to hospital for further tests. No further diagnosis or timeframe for his return was provided.
The incident occurred 25 minutes into the match, when the score was 0–0. Dortmund went on to win 3–2.
Karetsas joined Dortmund from Genk in the off-season on a reported $34.9 million transfer and signed a contract through June 2031. He previously represented Belgium at youth level before choosing to play internationally for Greece.
Dortmund teammate Giannis Konstantelias, another off-season signing, is reportedly sidelined after suffering an ACL injury on his Bundesliga debut.
