Doncic to meet incoming Lakers owners amid rapid franchise turnover

Luka Doncic is scheduled to hold a videoconference with incoming Los Angeles Lakers owners Josh Kushner and Bob Iger next week. The meeting will take place from Slovenia, where the guard is currently hosting a minicamp for his teammates from 20 to 24 August. According to reports from ESPN, Doncic expressed on X that he is looking forward to the engagement with the new ownership group.

The upcoming discussion follows a rapid series of transactions involving the franchise. In early February 2025, Doncic was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Lakers. Subsequently, Mark Walter, owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, negotiated to purchase the team from the Buss family, who had held the franchise since 1979. This week, Walter agreed to sell the majority stake in the Lakers to Kushner and Iger for a valuation of $12.5 billion.

Sources indicate that Doncic was not consulted regarding the sale of the team. Walter had acquired the Lakers for $10 billion in October 2025, making the recent transaction a swift turnover for the organisation. The sale was approved by the NBA board of governors, concluding a period of significant instability for the Los Angeles franchise.

Doncic will host the minicamp in his home country later this month. The event is viewed as his first gesture to assert his leadership as the franchise enters a new era following the departure of LeBron James earlier this summer.
