Swiatek ends title drought in Toronto as Shelton retains Montreal crown

Iga Swiatek has concluded an 11-month title drought by claiming the National Bank Open in Toronto, defeating world number two Elena Rybakina in straight sets. The Polish seventh seed secured her first title of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 victory, capitalising on unforced errors from her opponent to race through the final.

Swiatek established early control when Rybakina surrendered a break point on back-to-back double faults in the opening set. Despite Rybakina staving off one championship point, Swiatek converted her second opportunity in the second set to seal the match, ending her wait for a tour title since last September.

In a post-match address, Swiatek dedicated the victory to those facing public scrutiny. She stated she was speaking for "everyone who is dealing with unfair judgement and hate," urging recipients to "keep pushing, keep growing, keep focusing on yourself because you know what's best for you."

On the men's side in Montreal, American Ben Shelton successfully defended his title by defeating compatriot Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Shelton remained undefeated in sets throughout the tournament, a performance he attributed to his mental toughness and the work he has put in during the week.

Shelton’s retention of the crown places him in exclusive company, becoming only the fourth man in the 21st century to win back-to-back titles at the event, joining Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal. The results serve as a key indicator of form ahead of the US Open, which commences on 30 August.
