Tanzid Hasan’s 101 runs in Darwin not only secure a first-innings lead but also establish him as the first Bangladeshi player to score a century in Australia across any format.
Tanzid Hasan has become the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century in Australia, achieving the milestone during the first Test match in Darwin on 14 August 2026. His innings of 101 runs off 197 balls provided the foundation for Bangladesh to take an 80-run lead in the first innings, defying expectations set by a previous practice match where the visitors were bowled out for 54 runs.
The achievement extends beyond the Test format, as Hasan is also the first Bangladeshi player to score a century in Australia across any international format. No Bangladeshi batter has previously recorded a century in One Day Internationals or Twenty20 Internationals on Australian soil. This performance marks a significant departure from historical records, where previous centuries by players such as Mohammad Ashraful and Mushfiqur Rahim were achieved against the Australian side but outside of Australia.
Hasan’s contribution came in only his second Test match, following a strong bowling display by his teammates. Bangladeshi bowlers dismissed the Australian top order, with Hassan Mahmud taking 6/55, including the wickets of Travis Head and Steven Smith. This defensive solidity allowed Hasan to anchor the innings, reaching the century mark before being dismissed by Nathan Lyon.
The statistical record for Bangladeshi centuries in Australia remains sparse. While Ashraful scored a century against Australia in 2005, it occurred on foreign soil. Similarly, ODI centuries by Ashraful and Rahim were not achieved in Australia. The data indicates that prior to Hasan’s innings, no Bangladeshi player had ever crossed the 100-run threshold in a match played on Australian ground.
By reaching this milestone, Hasan has joined an elite group of batters who have scored a century against Australia. He is identified as one of only four batters to have achieved this feat against the Australian side, a statistic that underscores the difficulty of the task and the significance of his performance in Darwin.
