Donated discs bring Tippett Studios material online
An anonymous donor says 90 non-duplicate discs from the closed effects studio’s archives have been digitised and uploaded to the Internet Archive.
An anonymous donor has uploaded digitised material from Tippett Studios’ archives to the Internet Archive, making some clips viewable online and offering most of the collection as downloadable disc images.
The donor, identified as “TippettFan”, told Film Stories they acquired a folder of discs at an auction after the Berkeley-based animation and effects studio closed. They say they digitised 90 non-duplicate discs; the purchase price was not disclosed.
Reported contents include test clips of computer-generated creatures and a 2008 interview with Phil Tippett. Filenames also describe behind-the-scenes material related to RoboCop and Starship Troopers, slides of Tippett’s work on the original Star Wars, and publicity stills from Catwoman.
Film Stories reported that Tippett Studios closed on 28 August after a period of financial trouble, with props, memorabilia and art sold at a two-day auction. The year of the closure was not specified.
The archive’s completeness and preservation quality have not been independently verified. The source says some clips are viewable online, while most of the material is available as disc images.
