Dolphins preseason woes deepen as rookie linebacker Trey Moore injured
A 26-3 defeat to the New York Giants was overshadowed by an early injury to rookie linebacker Trey Moore, while receiver Chris Bell’s presence in warm-ups left fans speculating about his readiness for the season opener.

The Miami Dolphins’ preseason campaign took a significant turn for the worse at Hard Rock Stadium, where the team fell 26-3 to the New York Giants. While the scoreline itself is often treated as a footnote in an era where joint practices are prioritised over exhibition games, the night was defined by a concerning injury to rookie linebacker Trey Moore. Moore, a recent draft pick expected to play a significant role for the squad, was forced from the contest during the first series.
Moore sustained an injury to his left leg after landing awkwardly while attempting to block a pass from New York quarterback Jameis Winston. Trainers assisted the player off the field, where he was unable to put weight on the affected leg before being carried away on a cart. The specific diagnosis has not yet been confirmed, but the manner of his exit raised immediate concerns for a player whom head coach Jeff Hafley recently described as an “every-down” linebacker capable of filling multiple roles.
The injury compounded a night of limited offensive production for Miami. The Dolphins struggled to surpass 100 yards on offence throughout the contest, with their few highlights including a 53-yard field goal by Riley Patterson and a scramble by third-string quarterback Cam Miller to avoid a safety. The team also endured several penalties and turnovers, including holds by Ethan Bonner, Lonnie Johnson Jr., and Charlie Heck, a fumble by Jaylen Wright, and two dropped passes by Tutu Atwell.
Adding to the pregame intrigue was the presence of receiver Chris Bell, who was spotted in full uniform during warm-ups. Bell, who underwent knee surgery earlier in the year, did not take the field during the game. His participation in warm-ups has sparked speculation that his rehabilitation may be further along than previously thought, though his availability for the 13 September season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders remains uncertain.
General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan drafted Moore immediately after Bell, with both players expected to contribute significantly to the roster. However, with nearly all of Miami’s starters spectating, the contest served more as a test for the depth chart than a reflection of the team’s regular-season form. The Dolphins will now turn their attention to finalising their preparations before the regular season begins.
The team’s next scheduled appearance is the season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. Until then, the Dolphins will monitor Moore’s recovery and await further updates on Bell’s status, both of which are critical to the squad’s defensive and offensive strategies for the upcoming campaign.
