Dodgers secure August series victory as Snell returns from injury layoff

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell made his first start since 9 May, returning to the mound after a three-month layoff caused by loose bodies in his left elbow. Snell pitched six innings against the Kansas City Royals, striking out 10 batters and allowing one run on three hits. The Dodgers secured a 5-4 victory in 10 innings, marking their first series win of August and ending a slump where they had lost eight of their previous 10 games.

Snell struck out seven of the first 10 batters he faced, including striking out the side on 13 pitches in the first inning. He gave up back-to-back singles to Bobby Witt Jr and Jac Caglianone in the fourth inning; Witt scored on Salvador Perez’s sacrifice fly to tie the game 1-1. Snell allowed a double to Tyler Tolbert in the fifth inning before exiting. He received a no-decision in the victory.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated Snell is "on a mission" and noted Snell’s "swagger" when in command. Roberts observed that when Snell is in rhythm, he is not overthinking his mechanics, but when he is searching, the game can come to a standstill. The manager added that he can easily tell when the pitcher is in command by his posture and confidence on the mound.

Snell is one of three Dodgers pitchers to undergo surgery for loose bodies this season; Edwin Díaz and Tarik Skubal have also returned from similar elbow surgeries. Snell is returning from an injury for the third consecutive season in the second half of the year. He had made only one start this season prior to this game, giving up four runs and six hits in three innings against Atlanta on 9 May.

In other roster moves, reliever Blake Treinen was transferred to the 60-day injured list for elbow inflammation recovery. Left-hander Charlie Barnes was optioned to the minors after one day on the roster. Snell, who signed a $182 million, five-year deal with Los Angeles, helped the team win a second straight World Series championship last season.
