Dodgers prioritise Ohtani’s October readiness over immediate return
Los Angeles Dodgers are exercising caution with Shohei Ohtani’s left knee inflammation, ruling out a mound appearance in late July to safeguard his postseason availability.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has confirmed that Shohei Ohtani is not expected to return to the pitching mound next week, despite the two-way star participating in a bullpen session on Wednesday, 22 July. Roberts stated that the decision reflects a cautious management strategy, prioritising Ohtani’s long-term health for the October postseason over an immediate return in July.
Ohtani, who was sidelined prior to the MLB All-Star break due to inflammation and irritation in his left knee, has not pitched since 3 July. While he underwent a lubricant injection into the knee for relief, Roberts noted that the fluid was not drained. The manager emphasised that the club has already invested significant time in the player’s recovery and intends to avoid rushing the process.
"That's too early," Roberts told reporters regarding a potential return next week. "I feel very good that it won't be next week." He added that while every player desires to return to competition, Ohtani understands the strategic imperative of targeting October rather than July.
The Dodgers have adjusted their scheduling accordingly, having pulled Ohtani from a scheduled start earlier in the week. The organisation is exercising caution with the superstar’s workload in the second half of the season, ensuring that any future appearances are managed carefully.
Upon his eventual return to the mound, Ohtani is not expected to throw 100 pitches. He is scheduled to participate in another bullpen session on Saturday, 25 July in New York, though Roberts indicated it remains too early to confirm any game appearance beyond the current week.
