Dodgers lose key right-handed hitter Andy Pages to broken hand

Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star centre fielder Andy Pages has suffered a broken bone in his left hand, a significant setback for the two-time defending World Series champions as they navigate the final stretch of the regular season. The injury occurred during a 10-inning victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night, with the team announcing that Pages is expected to be sidelined for approximately four weeks.
Pages, who is 25, has emerged as the Dodgers’ top right-handed hitter this season, batting .272/.338/.458 with 21 home runs. His absence creates a notable gap in the lineup, as the team’s offense typically leans left-handed. Manager Dave Roberts noted that while there is still time in the season for Pages to return, the team must manage the roster in his absence.
Roberts indicated that he expects Pages to return on the earlier side of the four-week timeline, though it remains unclear whether surgery will be required, which could alter the recovery timetable. Pages displayed resilience by remaining in the game to run the bases and playing defence in the next half-inning before being removed.
To fill the roster spot, centre fielder Alek Thomas has been called up. Other options include utility players Enrique Hernández and Tommy Edman, though Hernández turns 35 on Monday and Edman is still recovering from ankle surgery. The Dodgers may be reluctant to rely heavily on either player for extensive outfield coverage.
The Dodgers currently hold a record of 78-51, leading the National League West. They maintain a three-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for the National League’s No. 2 seed, which would secure a Wild Series bye. Such a bye would not only improve their World Series odds but also provide additional time for Pages to heal before the National League Division Series.
With the regular season concluding on Sunday, 27 September, the team has five weeks and one day remaining. Pages’ defensive contributions, ranking in the top 10 among all outfielders in defensive runs saved and outs above average, will also be missed during this critical period.
