Developer redirects PS5 Twitch stream to Mac for Discord sharing
A DNS redirection setup sends the console’s Twitch RTMP stream to a Mac, where it can be played, recorded or routed through OBS.
A developer has described a way to share PlayStation 5 gameplay on Discord without a capture card, redirecting the console’s Twitch broadcast stream to a Mac running nginx-rtmp.
The method addresses a gap for players who want to share gameplay while keeping their usual controller and audio setup. The developer said Remote Play required connecting those devices to the Mac and sometimes introduced input lag.
The setup uses dnsmasq to direct Twitch ingest domains to the Mac’s local network address. The developer configured a GL.iNet router running OpenWRT to assign the Mac as the PS5’s DNS server, then used nginx-rtmp to receive the stream.
The developer reported that the console sent 1080p60 H.264 video with AAC stereo. The stream could be opened in mpv and shared as a window in Discord, or sent to OBS for re-streaming and recording. The author said mpv playback had less than a second of delay.
The post, published via Hacker News, says the setup had worked reliably for several weeks. Those performance claims reflect one developer’s experience; the account does not establish compatibility across other hardware or network configurations.
The developer also found that redirecting YouTube’s plain RTMP ingest worked initially, but the PS5 stopped broadcasting after about 60 seconds when a YouTube live-status check failed.
