Delhi Capitals cricketer accused of sexual relationship under false promise of marriage
Cricketer denies claims as investigation begins in West Bengal

Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel is the subject of a police investigation following a complaint lodged in West Bengal’s Hooghly district. The allegations, filed at the Mogra Police Station on Tuesday by a woman and her mother, accuse the 23-year-old of engaging in a sexual relationship under the false promise of marriage, alongside claims of assault and criminal intimidation.

According to the complaint, the couple had been in a relationship for three years. The complainant alleges that the dynamic shifted last year when Porel began to distance himself and withdrew from plans to marry. The filing asserts that Porel had previously assured the woman of marriage but subsequently backed away from that commitment while the relationship was ongoing.

Police authorities have confirmed that an investigation into the matter has been initiated. A police official told the Press Trust of India that the force had received the complaint and opened an inquiry, though no further procedural details were immediately released regarding the status of the case or any potential charges.

Porel, who is currently based in Bengaluru, has strongly denied the accusations. He described the allegations as baseless and suggested that the timing of the complaint coincides with his recent cricketing success. “I am playing well now, so various things are coming up,” Porel stated in media reports.

The cricketer indicated that he has not yet spoken with law enforcement and intends to provide a more detailed response once the preliminary stages of the police inquiry are complete. “I will talk about this when the police investigate,” he said.

Porel has been a member of the Delhi Capitals setup in the Indian Premier League since 2023. During the most recent IPL season, he scored 108 runs from four innings for the franchise. He made his first-class debut for Bengal during the 2021-22 domestic season and has since played in 32 first-class matches and 23 List A games.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities assess the evidence presented in the complaint. The validity of the allegations has not yet been established, and Porel’s assertion regarding the motive behind the filing remains an unproven claim.
